Letter: Justice can’t wait

You wouldn’t buy a used car without “kicking the tires.” Of course you’d do your due diligence to determine whether or not the car was a good deal. As voters we need to exercise the same due diligence. Before we vote in the upcoming election, we need to know whether or not candidate Trump is guilty of a criminal conspiracy to overthrow our last election. This is why the Supreme Court must issue its immunity opinion by May 20. This will allow sufficient time for Trump’s 2020 election insurrection trial to proceed and a jury of everyday Americans to reach a verdict before we, the voters, must reach our own verdict in this year’s election.

But the MAGA justices on the Supreme Court are delaying Trump’s criminal trial because they don’t want voters to know the truth about Trump. By submitting to the fiction that presidents are free to commit crimes, these MAGA justices are defeating voters’ most basic right. We deserve a speedy ruling on Trump’s conspiracy to overturn an election and silence our voices. In the past, the Supreme Court has ruled on critical cases, especially about electoral concerns, with extraordinary speed. Now the Court can and must rule on immunity by May 20. Every day of delay is a strike against American democracy. We must not allow justice delayed to become democracy destroyed. We must demand to hear the verdict on Trump’s insurrection attempt before casting our votes.
