Editorial: Murray is a great choice

The Monitor applauds the confirmation of Scott Murray as the new U.S. attorney for New Hampshire.

Murray is a consummate professional and a veteran prosecutor with heart. The more he saw of the worst of humanity – rapists, racists, murderers, a mother who maimed and tortured her son – the greater his concern for victims and the greater his hope that care and early intervention can prevent crimes from being committed.

Murray, a graduate of what is now the University of New Hampshire School of Law, prosecuted cases for the city of Concord for 27 years. He’s served as Merrimack County attorney for the past seven years. He served so fairly and ably that in 2012 he was nominated for a second term by both political parties. As county attorney he was lauded for his efforts to get drug addiction and mental health treatment for county jail inmates. He was a leader in the effort to use drug courts to steer young offenders into treatment and prevention programs rather than to a stint behind bars where they might get worse instead of better.

With the state in the throes of an opioid epidemic that’s clogging courts and killing residents, Murray is the perfect choice for the U.S. attorney job.
