Shortsighted

A few months back, I wrote in about my disappointment that Gov. Chris Sununu chose not to increase funding for the University System of New Hampshire. This week, the Republican-led Senate followed suit. In an age where partisanship has a death grip on our elected bodies, this conclusion was as predictable as the Patriots making the playoffs.

Just as predictable is the detrimental effect this lack of funding will have on New Hampshire. Unfortunately, the Republicans are reading off a different forecast sheet. Republicans unanimously voted down a measure to increase funding for the state’s University System by $3 million. To put that number in perspective, that proposed $3 million increase represents a minuscule 0.025 percent of the current proposed budget. Congratulations higher education students of New Hampshire! According to state Republicans, you are not worth an extra 0.025 percent investment. Let that sink in for a minute.

According to UNH’s website, we are dead last in the nation in per capita spending on higher education. For a rapidly graying state, this is alarming. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that not investing in higher education and, by extension, attracting the region’s best and brightest to our beautiful state, will have a much larger long-term impact than the $3 million savings these shortsighted Republicans are patting themselves on the back for.

Our universities are literally the future of our state. Republicans are making the choice to not invest in that future. What an embarrassment.
