RochesterOfficials investigate illegal oil dump in city

Officials in Rochester are investigating the illegal dumping of oil into the city’s wastewater system.

They said oil was first detected in the system last November, and then every month since February. The wastewater system is separate from the city’s drinking water system, which is not impacted.

Police are investigating the dumping as a criminal act. The city also has contacted the state Department of Environmental Services for assistance.

Rochester’s wastewater system consists of 90 miles of sewer piping, 28 pump stations and 10 locations. The maintenance cost to the city is estimated at $1,500 to $3,000 per oil dumping incident.
