Gilford’s Young, Concord’s Brochu ski to MOC victories

Eight days after winning the classic race at the Division III Nordic Skiing Championships, Gilford’s Mark Young once again found himself at the top of the podium, this time at Wednesday’s the Meet of Champions.

Young clocked a 9:40 at Proctor Academy, worth a comfortable lead over runner-up Jamie Wilkes (10:01) of Concord. Belmont’s Zachary Ennis, Concord’s Nate Nichols and Cam Brochu, Gilford’s Sander Valpey and Inter-Lakes’ Ian Daly rounded out the top seven finishers in the classic race. Gilford’s Seth Valey (ninth) also finished in the top 10.

Brochu prevented Young from completing the sweep on the day, winning the freestyle race in 12:12. Young (12:27) edged Bedford’s Michael Giraldi (12:28) for second place. Ennis (fourth), Wilkes (fifth) and Nichols (sixth) rounded out the top six.

On the girls’ side, Concord’s Heather Deacon (12:46) finished second in the classic race behind White Mountains’ Hallie Chancey (12:22). Kearsarge’s Marliese Baer (sixth), Maggie Lee (eighth) and Maddie Cook (ninth) finished in the top 10.

Lee was the top local finisher in the freestyle, which was won by Bedford’s Abigail Vikstrom (13:55). Kearsarge’s Lee (fourth) and Baer (sixth), Concord’s Deacon (seventh), Hopkinton’s Emma Rothe (ninth) and Bow’s Sohani Demian (10th) finished in the top 10.
