A 12-year-old girl waterskiing on Newfound Lake was struck and killed by a powerboat operated by her father, according to the New Hampshire Marine Patrol.

The patrol said Sherwood Anderson of Highland Ranch, Colo., was operating a 20-foot Cobalt boat in the town of Hebron on Monday morning, teaching his daughter, Zoe, how to slalom ski. Zoe’s mother and sister were also aboard the boat, officials said.

The girl fell, and her father drove the boat back toward her, but he became briefly distracted when his hat was blown off his head, according to reports. The patrol said Anderson put the boat in neutral as it passed over the top of the girl at a slow speed, but she suffered serious injuries to her torso.

The patrol said she was immediately brought to shore, and that CPR was started, but efforts to revive her were not successful.
