Baseball

Merrimack Valley 4, Bow 3

Highlights: Weed gave MV an early 2-0 lead with a third-inning double. Dougherty worked five solid innings before giving way to McPherson. Larrabee and Guerrette combined for 12 strikeouts in the loss.

Highlights: The Bears were one pitch away from a victory, leading 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Sanborn scored two runs on a walk-off single.

Highlights:  Underhill got the job done on the mound and at the plate, and the Raiders played strong defense behind him to preserve the shutout. Belmont’s bats also came alive with 10 total hits, eight RBI and four walks.

Highlights:  Hopkinton starting pitcher Nate Windhurst pitched well through two innings, allowing just two runs, but the Bears tallied four more runs in the third. The Hawks managed just one hit and couldn’t take advantage of Newfound’s mistakes in the field. The Bears’ centerfielder made four huge catches in the gaps to prevent Hopkinton from reaching base. Tyler Czarkowski pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 1.1 innings.

Coach’s quote:  “As a team we have to find a way to have great energy, and fight from first pitch to the last out regardless of the score. We need to improve to where we play with the same amount of heart, desire, and tenacity each pitch, each out and each inning. Highlights:  An injury to Hopkinton’s starting pitcher from a hard-hit line drive and another injury to the Hawks’ catcher in an awkward slide at home meant that Hopkinton had to move players to unfamiliar positions. The Hawks led 3-0 in the third, but the Bears took advantage of Hopkinton’s lineup changes to claim the victory.

Highlights:  Mundy, Tyrell and Bryson all combined to throw a shutout with nine strikeouts. Rose, Bryson and Archambault all had huge days at the plate, and Rose had a diving catch in centerfield in the third inning and doubled the runner off in Saturday’s season-opening win.

Highlights: Lebanon played a tough defensive first half, holding Bow to a 3-1 lead at halftime, but the Falcons came out firing in the third quarter to pull away. Luke Virta, Eli Ayers, Logan Rain, Auclair and Hubbard all stood out on defense, and sophomore Brad Ekstrom picked up his 17th career win in goal.

Highlights: The Hawks took a 3-1 after the first quarter, but the Cougars clawed their way to a 4-3 halftime lead. Kearsarge came out firing in the third and took a 6-3 lead, but from then on it was all Hopkinton. Tough transition play and opportunistic scoring gave Hopkinton the edge, but the Cougars didn’t make it easy and had some near misses that almost brought the game back to a tie.
