Letter: A bill for landlords, and landlords alone

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

SB247 is currently in the Financial Committee and will come back for a vote at the House of Representatives.

For those who don’t know, this bill is to “prevent childhood lead poisoning by subsidizing slumlords.”

This bill is cronyism at its worse. The law will set aside $3 million a year in order to give landlords (not homeowners) the money to upgrade their properties. They say the bill is “for the children” but what they mean is this bill is only for the children that rent from our friends. Me, as a homeowner with a house built in 1940, my children are at risk. But my children cannot access any of that money because I am not a landlord.

Please tell your representatives not to support this cronyism and to vote against this bill.
