Letter: With no plan in place, millions in Puerto Rico suffer

Sunday, October 08, 2017

The humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico is a colossal failure of leadership by Trump and his administration. Trump tweets about the NFL and proposes huge tax cuts for himself and fellow millionaires/billionaires while 3.5 million American citizens suffer. It’s shameful.

By contrast, according to the Washington Post, after an earthquake shattered Haiti’s capital on Jan. 12, 2010, President Obama mobilized the U.S. military as if it were going to war. Before dawn the next morning, an Army unit was airborne, on its way to seize control of the main airport in Port-au-Prince. Within two days, the Pentagon had 8,000 American troops en route. Within two weeks, 33 U.S. military ships and 22,000 troops had arrived. More than 300 military helicopters buzzed overhead, delivering millions of pounds of food and water.

Trump knew about the hurricane for a full week before it hit, unlike Obama and the earthquake in Haiti.

Clearly Trump did not do enough to prepare and plan for an emergency and disaster that was known to be coming and he has dithered since the hurricane arrived.

Trump’s incompetence is in full display as millions of Americans suffer.
