Letter: Making a mockery of our democracy

Tuesday, December 26, 2017

The Trump/GOP tax scam has passed. Trump said, “This is the biggest tax cut in U.S. history” but what it really is, is the biggest con job on the middle class and future generations in U.S. history.

Polls have shown that the people are against this tax bill by a 2 to 1 margin, so why did Trump and the GOP still vote for this tax bill? Simple answer is the greed of the rich and powerful. This government is not representing the majority of the people that they serve.

Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address, in describing the survival of America’s representative democracy said, “Government of the people, by the people, for the people…”

Is this a government of the people, by the people, and for the people? No, this tax bill is just another example that shows it is a government of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich.

Franklin Roosevelt said, “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a president and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.”

This tax bill is a mockery of those fine words by FDR.
