A University of New Hampshire survey found that a majority of residents are optimistic about the economy in the state, though Republicans are much more upbeat than Democrats.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled in the latest Business and Industry Association Report on Consumer Confidence said businesses in the state will prosper while 24 percent held mixed views and only 18 percent felt they would experience bad times.

A closer look found that 86 percent of Republicans were optimistic about the economy, far more than the 56 percent of independents and 36 percent of Democrats.

Five hundred and two people were interviewed by phone for the survey, which had a sampling error of 4.4 percent. It was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.
