Alexandra Welch-Zerba of Bow, a mother of an eight-year-old daughter named Anna, is a newly-published author. She and her mother, Sheila Welch of Exeter, collaborated to publish their own children’s book, Animals In My Room.

This story follows the nighttime adventures of a little girl, also named Anna, and her stuffed animals. A bear gets into a jar of honey, a lion has a late night snack, and Anna gets a ride from a unicorn in this fun rhyme book.

“My daughter and all of her many (over 100!) stuffed animals really were the inspiration for the book,” Welch-Zerba said.

Welch-Zerba a works at a preschool, and said she has always wanted to write a children’s book. She spends every night reading bedtime stories to her daughter, ever since Anna was born. But it was just three years ago when she sat down and started focusing on her writing. She began with creating rhymes, and is now a published author.

Welch has also contributed by creating all of the illustrations for kids to enjoy. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, which then led her to forming her own commercial arts business in Nantucket, Mass.

“My goal was to create animals that were quite realistic but with big personalities, happy smiles, silly clothing and bright colors,” Welch said. “Overall, they had to be magical and fun.” From just a glance at the cover, it seems that Welch has achieved that goal.

The two have come together to make a creative and intriguing story for young children.

“We wanted to create a bedtime story that would delight young children and capture their imaginations,” Welch-Zerba said.

Their book has been picked up by different companies around the state, and even one from Maine. Animals In My Room is being sold at Gibson’s in Concord, where the pair will also hold a book reading on Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. You can also find Animals In My Room at Water Street Bookstore in Exeter, Toadstool Bookshop in Keene, Mitchell’s Bookstore in Nantucket, Mass., and online on Amazon, for $14.99.

Welch-Zerba and Welch will hold a pajama reading time Dec. 28  at 6:30 p.m. at the Dunbarton Library. Children are encouraged to come in their jammies and bring their own stuffed animal.
