Gilford police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a rollover crash that killed a woman Saturday evening on the Laconia bypass.

Investigators said a small sport utility vehicle carrying a family of three, including a 1-year-old girl, was traveling south on the Route 3/11 bypass just prior to the crash. The toddler was uninjured; however, her mother, 22-year-old Rhianna Santiago, was ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to her injuries at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, police said.

Santigao’s husband, 25-year-old Darren Cartier, was driving the SUV, according to published reports. He was hospitalized for treatment of critical injuries following the crash, which occurred between Morrill Street and Gilford Avenue just before 5 p.m., police and fire officials said.

Gilford police Sgt. Chris Jacques said Monday that the department is looking into whether a second vehicle was involved and, if so, what factors contributed to the collision.

A section of the bypass was closed for approximately seven hours following the fatal crash.

New Hampshire State Police’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (CAR) Unit are assisting Gilford police with the investigation. Police and fire officials from Laconia also assisted at the scene.

Gilford police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the department at 527-4737.
