The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots will kickoff the NFL season on Thursday, Sept. 7, against the Kansas City Chiefs, the league announced Thursday.

The Patriots, who will have their bye Week 9, will have a tougher road in the second half of the season. Once it returns from the bye, New England will play five of its next six games on the road, including a trip to Mexico City on Nov. 19 to play the Oakland Raiders.

The Patriots close out the season with back-to-back games against AFC East teams at home – the Bills on Christmas Eve and the Jets in the regular-season finale.

All in all, New England plays nine games in the 1 p.m. slot and five games in primetime, including the season opener. See the full schedule on C2.
