There is a war on Christmas

Katy Burns (Monitor Forum, Dec. 3) concludes that there is no war on Christmas but rather there is political action surrounding Christmas greetings.

I believe there is a war on Christmas that has been going on all my life. But we are seeing a new dimension to that war. It is being conducted by those who are acting contrary to the spirit of Christmas.

As I understand it, the spirit of Christmas is captured in the expression of peace on Earth and good will to all (Luke 2:14). Those who insist on the expression “Merry Christmas” exhibit hostility to those who decline to conform to their ideas. Their hostility to non-Christian people of faith is the antithesis of good will and does not contribute to peace on Earth.

Making the Christmas greeting political, as President Trump has done, rings hollow. No one in the White House in my lifetime has so constantly behaved contrary to the spirit of “Peace on Earth and good will to all.” That truly is a war on Christmas.
