A Laconia man is accused of stealing from the Salvation Army’s holiday collection bucket earlier this month.

James Lawrence, 55, is charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer in connection with the Dec. 7 incident.

Police said witnesses reported seeing a Salvation Army bell-ringer put a couple of bills into his jacket pocket at the donation area at the intersection of Main and Please streets. A witness videotaped the man stealing a $5 bill sticking out of the slot at the top of the collection bucket, police said.

Lawrence was arrested Monday afternoon on a warrant issued by Laconia police. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 25 in Laconia’s district court.

Laconia police ask anyone with information about the case to contact the department at 524-1717.
