Letter: ‘This is about politics’

Is it difficult to fathom the cowardly words and actions of our current New Hampshire governor. He has once more shown us, and the rest of the world, the true nature of his character. On ABC’s This Week, which aired on 4/14, George Stephanopoulos asked Sununu if he supports the former president “even if he’s convicted in [the] classified documents [case]. You [Sununu] support him for president even though you believe he contributed to an insurrection. You [Sununu] support him for president even though you believe he’s lying about the last election. You [Sununu] support him for president even if he’s convicted in the Manhattan case?” Sununu responded, “Yeah.”

Sununu’s choices and the choices of a vast majority of Republican politicians reveal time and again that they are willing to forfeit their principles for power while marginalizing women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and so many others. They are afraid of the former president and pander to his whims, seeking to remain in his good graces. We can be assured that Republican candidates in our upcoming elections will continue to do as they are told rather than listening, debating, and compromising in order to restore a democracy that serves us all. Simon Sinek, an American author who speaks frequently on leadership, cautions us that “there are only two ways to influence behavior: you can manipulate it or you can inspire it.” Aren’t our Republican ‘friends’ fed up with being manipulated by a leader who only cares about himself? Is our governor?
