Pembroke Academy and Merrimack Valley may have both lost in Monday’s Division II boys’ semifinals, but the Spartans and the Pride were both well represented on the New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization’s All-State lists.

Pembroke junior Noah Cummings was a First Team D-II selection for Pembroke, which finished 16-5 after a heartbreaking 58-57 overtime loss to Oyster River in the semifinal, and PA senior Jake Sherman was a Second Team D-II pick. Merrimack Valley’s Ryan Defina was also named to the Second Team while MV senior Jake Hebert was an Honorable Mention and MV’s Tim Mucher was named D-II Coach of the Year.

“Coach Mucher came when us seniors were sophomores and he flipped the program upside down,” MV senior Caleb LeClair said after the Pride’s 46-43 loss in the semifinals to Hollis-Brookline.

The Pride went 4-14 in Mucher’s first season, but things turned around last year with a 10-8 mark. This season, MV finished 15-6 and reached the symbolic goal for all D-I and D-II teams – the University of New Hampshire, site of the Final Four.

“This has always been the goal, to make it here,” LeCair said. “We could barely make it to .500 before and now we made it to UNH.”

That was hardly the only recognition for local D-II boys. Kearsarge senior big man Tayler Mattos was named the D-II Player of the Year and his teammate senior guard Tommy Johnson was also a First Team pick. The Cougars were 14-1 with Mattos and Johnson in the lineup, but that one loss came in the quarterfinals against Merrimack Valley when Hebert banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 46-44 win. Mattos was the D-III Player of the Year last year for Kearsarge, which won the D-III title before moving up to D-II this winter.

Coe-Brown senior guard Scott Spenard was also named to the D-II First Team. Spenard, who as a D-II Honorable Mention last year when he helped the Bears to the finals, led Coe-Brown to a 14-6 mark this year and a spot in the quarterfinals. Coe-Brown’s Luke McCusker was a D-II Honorable Mention.

Bishop Brady senior Bryce Johnson (First Team) and John Stark junior Parker McQuarrie (Honorable Mention) round out the local D-II boys’ honors.

Mattos was one of three local Players of the Year along with Pittsfield’s Cam Darrah and Hopkinton’s Taylor Signor.

Darrah led the Panthers to a 43-40 win over Newmarket in the D-IV championship, delivering the first basketball title in school history to Pittsfield. He had plenty of help from a pair of Second Team D-IV picks – seniors Garret Guerrero-Hadley and Josh Whittier. The Panthers also received the D-IV boys’ JV Coach of the Year honor.

Signor, a senior point guard, led the sixth-seeded Hawks to playoff wins against No. 3 Newfound in the D-III girls’ quarterfinals and No. 2 Gilford in the semifinals before Hopkinton fell in the championship to Conant. And Signor wasn’t the only Hawk to get some weighty recognition – Pat Roye was named the D-III girls’ Coach of the Year and senior Abby Houston was also a First Team pick.

“Mr. Roye is a really amazing coach,” Houston said after the 36-30 final loss to Conant. “He kind of shaped this program into what it is.”

Hopkinton went 6-12 last year, Roye’s first season at the helm, but turned it around and finished 17-5 this winter. Amelia Thomas, a junior, was an Honorable Mention selection for the Hawks, and Hopkinton also received the JV Coach of the Year award.

Newfound junior Ashlee Dukette, last year’s D-III Player of the Year, and Gilford senior Brooke Beaudet, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, were also named to the D-III First Team. Gilford’s Shelby Cole and Belmont’s Julianna Estremera were Second Team picks while Inter-Lakes’ Emma Wheeler, Franklin’s Lauren Marsh and Newfound’s Savanna Bony all received Honorable Mention.

Hopkinton was also home to the boys’ D-III Coach of the Year, Stephen Signor. His Hawks went 16-2 in the regular season and were the top seed heading into the tournament before being upset in the quarterfinals by Monadnock. Hopkinton’s Kevin McGrath was a Second Team pick while Dustin Rose and Zach Signor, Stephen’s son and Taylor’s brother, both received Honorable Mention.

Franklin senior guard Jayden Torres was the leading scorer in D-III at 27.4 points per game and a boys’ D-III Second Team selection along with Inter-Lakes’ sophomore Eli Swanson, who was the division’s second leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, and Belmont senior Matt Pluskis. Gilford’s David Hart and Greg Madore, Laconia’s Ryan Chandler, and Winnisquam’s Kyle Mann were all Honorable Mention selections.

Bishop Brady senior point guard Sarah Doherty was the lone local girls’ D-II First Team selection. Doherty and Lauren Roy, a D-II Honorable Mention, helped the Green Giants upset previously unbeaten Portsmouth in the quarterfinals. Coe-Brown’s Ahna McCusker and Merrimack Valley’s Abby Grandmaison were both D-II Second Team picks while Bow’s Lea Crompton, John Stark’s Jillian Douzainis and Merrimack Valley’s Carly Huckins all received Honorable Mention.
