Town votes to keep English-only signs

The signs at a Merrimack town park and beach will remain English only.

Town councilors voted Thursday night not to include rules in Spanish at Wasserman Park. The idea came up after police say Spanish-speakers argued they couldn't read the rules.

"We will not cater to those who are just too lazy to learn the English language," said resident Pat Murphy to the council, wearing a patriotic shirt and gripping a tiny American flag.

Resident Dan Bogdan also opposed bilingual signs, pointing out that the real issue is about laws being broken. "When does it stop?" he asked. "Pretty soon you'll want it in Braille."

This winter, the council will discuss whether to make part of Wasserman Park open only to Merrimack residents.
