Re "Senate backs lifeline for charters" (Monitor Local & State page, May 2):
My son is a fifth-grade student at the Seacoast Charter School. The charter schools in New Hampshire have diligently advocated and spent hours trying to find money to make sure these schools don't close due to lack of funds - which will happen if we don't stand up for public charter schools. I am surprised and angry to hear that there is a source of funding to keep the charter schools open that does not involve appropriating additional funds from the state budget.
The local school in my town is receiving money for my son when he has not attended that school for the entire school year. It's my understanding they'll continue to receive money for him for the next two years even when he's not attending that school! Why is this up for debate? That money should be rerouted to the public school he does attend, the Seacoast Charter School. This does not take away from our local school because they will still receive funding for the children who do attend that school. This rerouting amendment would provide the money the charter schools have been fighting for to fund HB 1642.
I hope every parent in this state speaks up to the Senate about this issue!
