FRANKLIN - Cpl. Scott G. Dimond, 39, of Freedom Drive, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Mountain Infantry Regiment, New Hampshire National Guard, Milford, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and his patrol was engaged in a small-arms fire attack.
At the time of his death, he served with the Tactical Training Team, assisting the Afghan National Army and Police Force. Scott was born in Franklin on March 25, 1969, a son of Leland C. and Marie (Danforth) Dimond. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin and graduate of Franklin High School, Class of 1987, where he participated in the football and track and field programs. He continued his interest in football after graduation, coaching the Franklin Pop Warner team.
Scott enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in his senior year of high school. He was medically discharged as a result of a serious football injury. Scott decided he would still serve our citizens, but in a different capacity when he began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Franklin Police Department, retiring as a sergeant after 18 years of service.
He enlisted in the New Hampshire National Guard in 2006 while he worked on his registered nurse degree, looking forward to helping others in the health care profession. Scott was a member of the Military Forces Honor Guard, traveling statewide to honor those who served. He was a member of the Central Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Scott was predeceased by a brother, Leland J. Dimond, who died in 1987.
His family includes his wife, Jennifer M. (Ordway) Dimond; a son, Luke F. Dimond; daughters, Ashlee M., Alexis G. and Madison Dimond of Franklin; his father and stepmother, Leland C. and Peggy (Kulus) Dimond of Belmont; his mother and stepfather, Marie (Danforth) and Geno Gnerre of Bridgewater; his sisters, Angela Amaral of Sarasota, Fla., Leanna Thackery of Berlin; his brother, Ernest Noyes of Merrimack; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Denise Ordway of Franklin; his sister-in-law, Christine Murray of Salisbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Franklin Middle School, 200 Sanborn St., Franklin.
A service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the middle school. Burial with full military honors will follow at Franklin Cemetery. The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is assisting the Dimond family with arrangements.
