A summer of music in Henniker

June 11, 2009 - 12:00 am

Aside from a big drippy ice cream cone or a game of pick-up Wiffle ball, nothing epitomes summer like a concert on the green. The Henniker Concert Committee has got your summer cravings covered, with 11 straight weeks of music ranging from jazz to bluegrass to big band. The concerts take place every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Angela Robin Bandstand in Community Park.

Kicking off the season on Tuesday is Jeff Dearborn and the Contoocook Blues Society, an upbeat, Chicago-style blues band. A tree cutter by day and a bluesman by night, Dearborn will lead the band though blues standards by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and James Cotton, as well as some of his own compositions.

The East Bay Jazz Ensemble hits the green June 23, followed by the Freese Brothers Big Band on June 30. A long-running Henniker tradition, the concert series welcomes some newcomers to its lineup this year, including rockers Kid Pinky, female swing trio Swing A Cat and the Celtic-inspired Estes & Bagglio.

The concerts run through Aug. 25. In case of rain, the festivities move inside to the community center. For more information, e-mail Tom Dunn at dunn.t@Comcast.net.
