June 11, 2009 - 12:00 am

The fire that killed a Pittsfield father and daughter in their apartment Monday morning started in the kitchen, investigators said yesterday. But investigators haven't determined the fire's cause, according to a state fire marshal's office statement.

Richard Johnston, 55, and Heidi Johnston, 26, were in their second-floor apartment on Main Street when the fire broke out. They died of smoke inhalation, according to the state medical examiner.

Memorial funds have been set up to help the Johnston family, as well as the building's other displaced tenants. Donations may be made to Citizens Bank, 54 Main St., Pittsfield; or Northway Bank, 55 Main St., Pittsfield. In both cases, those who donate should specify the gift is for "Fire Victims of 36 Main St., Pittsfield."
