Dana Kimball Ball, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House.
Dana was born in the suburbs of Boston on Sept. 21, 1919, to Howard Thompson and Alta (Kimball) Ball. In 1925, his parents, both of whom were New Hampshire natives, moved back to Claremont, where his father joined the hardware business Rand, Ball and King, of which Dana's grandfather was president.
Dana was educated at Claremont schools and was a 1937 graduate of Stevens High School. He attended the University of New Hampshire for two years and then was employed at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war, he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and Chi Psi social fraternity. He obtained his master's degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He was employed as a senior analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency until his retirement in 1973.
After returning to New Hampshire in 1974, Dana and his wife were active antiques dealers for many years, mostly in the Concord area. He was a student of history and was known for his careful genealogical research. He also did fine picture framing and photography, and he was an excellent gardener. He was a member of the New Hampshire Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Hill) Ball, who was a fellow employee at the CIA; a nephew, David Hebert of Rutland, Vt.; his sisters-in-law, Judy Veney of Prescott, Ariz., and Charlotte Hill of Vero Beach, Fla.; his brother-in-law, Daniel Hill of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Nancy Ball Hebert in 2005.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord, with the Rev. Arthur C. Urie officiating.
Burial will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Salisbury, following the service.
