Work wear of Central New Hampshire in Campton is holding its second annual Rotten Boot Contest. Dig out your stinkiest pair and head to the store Sept. 26. Come hungry. All proceeds from sales of hotdogs and other refreshments will go to the A+ Program, which offers after-school and other student-enrichment programs in the region.
The contest winner receives a free pair of Red Wing boots. Store owner Ann-Marie Keeney explains.
Where did you get the idea for the contest? It was actually my husband's idea. I have to give him credit. . . . An out-of-the-box idea to generate excitement, money for a local charity and sales.
What are the judging criteria? The boots are judged on several categories, including the sole, the tongue, the toe, the laces, the overall condition and, of course, the smell.
Who are the lucky judges that get to take a whiff? We have four volunteer judges. Alex Ray, who is the owner of the Common Man family of restaurants. The local police chief in Campton, Chris Warn. The other judge is Richard Manzi, the loan officer for Community Guaranty Savings Bank. He's a well-known local guy. And there's a representative from Red Wing, Steve Perry.
Was the competition fierce last year? The judges were a little disappointed that the boots weren't as stinky as they wanted.
And this year? They're a little nervous because people have been saving their boots, as I understand.
