In eight words scribbled on the bottom of a court filing, a judge has denied early release to the woman who embezzled more than $400,000 from the Concord School District's lunch program.
Eight months after she pleaded guilty and received a 3- to 10-year prison sentence, Edith Kelley of Loudon asked the Merrimack County Superior Court to let her serve her sentence at home. She told the court she had taken classes in anger management and pet fostering and longed to return to her role as wife and mother.
The Merrimack County Attorney's Office strongly objected, and Judge Kenneth Brown agreed, writing in Kelley's file: "The court objects to (Administrative Home Confinement) at this time."
Kelley stole $419,000 over seven years from the school lunch program by taking $300 to $400 a day, according to court records. It was her job to count the $5,000 a day the district collected from students buying lunch.
The theft was discovered by an outside audit, according to court records. The school district has since changed the way it handles lunch money.
