Officers used tear gas to get a Belmont man wanted on sexual assault counts out of his mobile home after he remained barricaded inside for four hours Thursday night.

Shayne Chase, 44, was wanted for sexual assault against a teenage girl over a period of time ending Thursday, when the girl called the police, said Belmont police Chief Vinnie Baiocchetti. Belmont detectives got a search warrant and called in the regional SWAT team to make the arrest because Chase was thought to be armed with a bow and arrow, muzzleloader and at least one rifle, Baiocchetti said.

"They used a bunch of gas," Baiocchetti said.

About 60 residents of the Pine Gardens Mobile Home Park were evacuated starting about 8 p.m. Thursday. Some remained in their cars, while others visited friends or stayed in a local emergency shelter. They were allowed to return home around midnight.

"Everything went smoothly and nobody got hurt, so it was quite successful," Baiocchetti said. "It was unfortunate this happened, but it was just good that nobody got hurt."

Chase faces two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and a single count of simple assault. He also faces charges of resisting arrest.

"The investigation still continues," Baiocchetti said. "We're getting ready to execute a search warrant."

Chase was arraigned yesterday in Laconia District Court, where bail was set at $60,000 cash only. He was taken to the Belknap County House of Corrections.
