The police arrested a Gilford man after he was caught red-handed breaking into his neighbor's home in an attempt to burglarize it, according to Gilford police Detective Douglas Wall.
At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, a woman returned to her 6 Cumberland Road condo to find noises coming from the basement. When she went downstairs to look around, she was confronted by her neighbor, Luke Jackman, 29, who lives in the same condo complex.
He immediately took off on foot, the police said.
When officers arrived, they set up a perimeter around the home, and, after several hours, were able to track Jackman back to his own nearby condo using a police dog, according to a release.
Jackman, who was on probation, was arrested on two counts of burglary. He will be arraigned in Laconia District Court on Nov. 19. Until then, he is being held at the Belknap County House of Corrections on a probation violation.
The police said he may have entered the home through an open window in the basement. Officers found a curtain that once covered the window had fallen to the floor.
