November 01, 2009 - 12:00 am

Unemployment benefits are running out for many state residents, and that number will increase each week unless Washington, D.C., approves an extension.

Yesterday marked the end of extended benefits for 500 residents. WMUR reported that in each coming week up to 200 people will no longer get checks, meaning up to 1,600 people will have no assistance by year's end.

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said the Senate will vote tomorrow on a 14-week extension for anyone who would lose benefits before the end of the year. States where unemployment rates are higher than 8.5 percent will get an additional six weeks.
