A Belmont man arrested on sexual assault charges following a four-hour standoff with the police last week raped a 14-year-old girl for a period of two years and made video tapes of the acts, according to a police affidavit released yesterday.

Shayne Chase, 44, of 96 Scenic Drive, was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail Monday after being charged with five counts of rape, two counts of manufacturing child pornography and two counts of possessing child pornography. Those were on top of the two counts of rape and one of simple assault that Chase was charged with Thursday.

On Oct. 22, the 14-year-old went to a high school guidance counselor, who in turn called the police. The girl said Chase forced her to perform oral sex on him the day before while the two were on a walk near his house, the affidavit said. The girl also told the police Chase engaged her in sexual intercourse at his house and took videos on several occasions, according to the affidavit.

While on the walk, Chase confronted the girl about liking a boy at school, and when she told him it was true, "Chase became angry and called her a slut, and then he slapped her across the face," the affidavit said. "Chase then placed his hands across her neck and squeezed and then punched her on her forehead with his fist."

When Chase was arrested, Belmont detectives called in a regional SWAT team because he was believed to be armed, according to police Chief Vinnie Baiocchetti. Sixty residents were removed from the area during the four-hour standoff, which ended when the police smoked Chase out of his home with tear gas.

The newest charges stem from a search of the house in the days after Chase's arrest. When the police first searched the home Oct. 23, they recovered several VHS tapes and DVDs they believed contained child pornography, the affidavit said. The tapes did not contain what the police were looking for, and two days later, authorities received a tip that media cards with the sex acts had been hidden in a "cat tower," the affidavit said.

After obtaining another search warrant, the police obtained the media cards - containing movies, pictures and data files - in a cat box at the residence, the affidavit said.

A video on one of the cards showed the girl masturbating on Chase's bed naked, and she "was given a green bong to smoke from," the affidavit said. "A male voice can be heard in the background stating, 'Hold your breath when you smoke.' "

On another video, the girl is again lying naked on Chase's bed and using a vibrator while a man can be heard in the background. The girl is then seen engaging in sexual intercourse with a man, the affidavit said. But it does not indicate whether that man is Chase.

A probable cause hearing to address the 11 felony charges and two misdemeanors against Chase is scheduled for Monday morning.
