MANCHESTER - Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov ricocheted the puck off a defender and into the net 3:21 into the third period for the game-winning goal as the Manchester Monarchs beat the Hartford Wolf Pack, 2-1, at Verizon Wireless Arena last night.
The goal was Voynov's fourth of the year. After picking up a bouncing puck, his shot hit off a Hartford defender's stick in front of the crease and redirected straight into the open net on the right side of goaltender Chad Johnson. Justin Azevedo and Juraj Mikus picked up assists on the goal.
Hartford had taken a 1-0 second-period lead when right wing P.A. Parenteau scored his team-leading 10th goal at 1:49 on the power play.
But the Monarchs tied the game early in the third period when defenseman Andrew Campbell blistered a shot by Johnson on a one-timer (it was his first goal of the year) at the 54-second mark. Andrei Loktionov and Oscar Moller assisted on the power-play strike.
Manchester goalie Jonathan Bernier (7-3-1) stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Hartford's Johnson (6-4-0) made 22 saves.
Manchester (10-3-1-1) continues to lead the Atlantic Division with 22 points. Hartford (8-7-0-0) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 16 points.
The Monarchs face off against the Wolf Pack in Hartford tomorrow at 7 p.m.
