Why is there grass growing on the roof at the new Weston Solutions building at Horseshoe Pond?
For one thing, said project manager Jared Markham, it's not just grass. There are four different plant mixes, including edible chives, a mix of sedum plants, Eastern prickly pear and some ornamental grass.
The green roof is expected to reduce the amount of storm water runoff by 50 percent. It should extend the life of the roof by 50 to 100 percent by keeping its temperature more constant. The roof also includes an accessible deck for employees. It will also help cool the building in the summer. The plants there should be able to survive on rain water, with no irrigation needed.
The energy-efficient office building also includes geothermal heating and cooling systems. It is expected to open Dec. 12.
