A family physician who used to practice at a LRGHealthcare-owned practice has been censured by the state Board of Medicine for improperly writing prescriptions to his father and for other lapses in medical record-keeping.

According to board allegations contained in a settlement signed by Dr. Hasan Duymazlar and his lawyer, Duymazlar wrote several prescriptions for his father, including one for a controlled substance, but filed them under the name of a nurse practitioner at his practice. Duymazlar also failed to maintain any medical record of "diagnosis, care or treatment" he provided to his father, who is also a physician.

The board also accused Duymazlar of failing to follow state and federal laws when ordering medications from the private practice he formed after leaving LRGHealthcare. According to the settlement, Duymazlar similarly wrote prescriptions for the Meredith Laser Body Sculpting practice under the name of his nurse.

Under the terms of the settlement, Duymazlar neither admits nor denies the allegations, but agrees that he is subject to disciplinary sanctions for his conduct.

"Dr. Duymazlar wanted to resolve this matter as quickly as possible so he can focus on patient care, which has always been his highest priority," said Brian Quirk, Duymazlar's attorney. "He has accepted responsibility for the deficiencies in his record keeping, which was at the heart of this matter."

A spokeswoman for LRGHealthcare said the hospital was aware of the settlement but could not comment on the case because it related to personnel matters. The settlement indicates that the organization was the first to alert the board to possible wrongdoing.

As punishment, the board has asked Duymazlar to pay a $3,000 fine and to take 36 hours of continuing medical education in the areas of medical ethics, the treatment of family members and documentation. He must also "meaningfully participate" in a New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy course on prescribing practices. He must share the settlement with his current employer and any future employer for the next year.

Quirk said that Duymazlar intends to comply with the sanctions and intends to improve his record keeping to prevent future problems.
