A Concord man arrested last week for allegedly selling heroin will see theft charges brought against him soon, the police said yesterday, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Stephen Michael Perkins, 29, of 5 Herrod St., was arrested Friday on three counts of sale of a controlled drug for allegedly selling heroin to undercover officers on three occasions, according to the police. When Perkins's apartment was searched, officers said they found property stolen from Franklin Pierce Law Center, NHTI and Southern New Hampshire University. Those items included text books, computers, wallets, credit cards and identification cards, according to the police.
Eric Norman, vice president of Franklin Pierce Law Center, said yesterday that thefts from the school started in October and happened on a daily basis, continuing until "fairly recently." He estimated that between seven and 10 students had items like books, computers and wallets taken from their backpacks, which were sometimes left outside classrooms. Many students felt a "sense of trust" at the school before the string of thefts, he said.
Security at the school has since tightened up, Norman said, and students have been encouraged to put personal items in lockers and lock them up.
Southern New Hampshire University also experienced "several minor thefts," in recent months, according to spokesman Gregg Mazzola. In one case personal property was stolen, and in another, campus property, he said, declining to say more.
Deputy John Duval of the Concord Police Department would not comment yesterday on details of the investigation but said charges against Perkins would be forthcoming.
"We're going through a mountain of evidence right now," he said. "All the victims haven't been identified or located."
According to court records, Perkins has been convicted in the past for forgery, multiple simple assaults, criminal threatening, breach of bail and criminal mischief.
For the drug charges, Perkins is being held on $15,000 cash or bail. A trial is scheduled for February.
