2 covered bridges undergoing repairs

Repairs are being made to two historic covered bridges in Newport.
Work on the Pier Covered Bridge and Wrights Covered Bridge begins today and will last a week. During that time, the Sugar River Recreational Trail that starts in Newport and passes by both bridges will be closed at those points.
In addition to structural repairs, the work will include installing sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and fire retardant paint.
The work is being done in collaboration between the Department of Resources and Economic Development, the Division of Historical Resources, the Department of Transportation and the town of Newport.
