My husband and I support the Bohanan Farm conservation easement effort.
We live in the neighborhood and have been "sneaking" onto the property for years. One night, accompanied by friends, we hiked along an old logging road to the top of Courser Hill to watch the moon and starlit sky. We soon noticed several sets of glowing coyote eyes watching us from the edge of the clearing. We quickly left the hill, hearts racing, but aware of our interdependency with nature.
The Contoocook, Warner, and Blackwater rivers abut these 413 acres where wildlife abounds. Four and a half cents per $1,000 in assessed value over 20 years is short money for a long investment. I appreciate that money is tight and that the economy won't notably improve for months, perhaps years. However, for a home worth $300,000, that's $13 per year - the cost of a few Happy Meals.
I hope that our human neighbors recognize and appreciate what our nonhuman neighbors already do: protecting the Bohanans' land is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a truly wonderful place accessible for all to enjoy and share into perpetuity.
