A Vermont driver who hit a deer Saturday night on Interstate 89 north found himself facing against traffic in an SUV with smashed headlights, according to the state police. When Timotheus Phol, 60, of Hartland, Vt., got out and waved his arms at oncoming drivers, he was struck by two cars, the police said.

Phol was airlifted from Sutton to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, where he was treated for broken ribs, a broken wrist and lacerations, the police said. He was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon.

Phol had been standing outside the Mercedes SUV when he was struck first by a Toyota Corolla driven by James McKeon, 26, of Saco, Maine, and then by a Ford Escape driven by Nicole Cormier, 21, of North Reading, Mass., according to the police. McKeon received lacerations and was transported to a local hospital, while Cormier was not injured, the police said.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 89 in Sutton were closed for two hours Saturday.
