Only four teams managed to score against Timberlane during the Owls' undefeated, championship season last year. So Concord knew it would be in for a challenge yesterday in its field hockey opener.

And no, the Tide didn't score yesterday, continuing its offensive struggles from a year ago, but Concord did just about everything else right in a 1-0 loss to the defending champs.

"We played great, except we've got to finish. We've got to put the ball in the back of the net," Concord Coach Stephanie Georgevits said. "We dominated play for a lot of the game.

"I only wish how well you play determined who wins."

For a team coming off a frustrating season a year ago, the closely contested battle with Timberlane was certainly a moral victory.

Concord held play in Timberlane's end for long stretches of the first half. But when the ball rattled around in front of the goal mouth, the Tide simply couldn't put the stick on it to seal the deal.

Timberlane had a couple of chances as well, but Concord's defense - led by the shut-down play of Kailyn Parenteau, Erin Demers and Catie Donlon - kept those chances at a minimum. Parenteau's hustle play broke up a potential one-on-one bid by Timberlane's Sarah Richardson, then Tide goalie Katie Dejoie (four saves) closed down the corner of the goal with a pad save on a hard shot from Hannah Feneberg.

The Owls finally broke through for the game's only tally with 3:35 remaining in the first half when Masha Lange knocked in a shot from the right post after the Tide defense denied an initial bid.

"Katie made some good saves, and if Leigha (Jobin) made a nice run or Brittany (Premo) did, it sparked the rest of the team," Georgevits said. "Anyone on the team can provide that spark."

The Tide showed it's getting closer, now it's a matter of finishing.

"We did have a lot of opportunities," Georgevits said. "It gives us something to work towards."

GIRLS' SOCCER

St. Thomas 2, Bishop Brady 1

Bishop Brady came out firing on all cylinders against St. Thomas at their season opener, but lost the tight game when the winning goal came with 5:31 left to play. After being knocked out in the first round by this same team last year, Brady came back with a vengeance and played a "very impressive game," Coach Rich Dougherty said.

Brady's Meg Bryck scored the first goal, capping a dynamic play. Kelly O'Keefe passed from the corner to Maddy Moran, who slid the ball to Bryck for a 1-0 lead with 12:08 left in the first half. St. Thomas then retaliated with 7:26 left before halftime. Then, late in the second half, St. Thomas scored the winning goal after a Bishop Brady injury instituted a shift in the momentum.

Cammie Marchand, a freshman who tasted her first varsity play in goal, recorded 17 saves. St. Thomas had 11 corner kicks and 64 team fouls compared to Brady's one capitalized attempt and 27 team fouls.

Pittsfield 6, Hinsdale 0

Pittsfield shut out Hinsdale in its season opener.

Colleen Corliss scored the first, fourth and fifth goals of the game, assisted by Crystal Lively and Jen Tyrell. Bryce Paradise, freshman Stephanie Gauthier (assisted by Anna Toll) and Haley Beckman (off a deflection) finished the offensive frenzy.

Kayleen Rojeck was solid in goal, and Jillian Towle played well on defense.

Concord 4, Nashua North 0

In a game played on Tuesday, the Crimson Tide opened the fall season with a convincing win over the Titans.

Concord got goals from freshman Caroline Andy (two goals), Jamie Breton and Kiara Luers.

Goalkeeper Rachel Robertson earned the shutout.

BOYS' SOCCER

Laconia 6, Bishop Brady 2

Bishop Brady fell to Laconia to drop to 0-2. Tim Garrett scored for the Green Giants six minutes into the second half to shorten the Sachems lead, but Tony Delgado and Bojan Sikima scored twice each for Laconia (2-0). Connor Brown scored for Brady with three minutes left in the second half, but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback.

GOLF

Concord third

Concord placed third in its first match of the season at Derryfield Country Club.

The Crimson Tide shot a 198 for its lowest score in three years, finishing behind first-place Manchester Memorial (195) and Dover (197), and ahead of Manchester West (208). Brendan Garrett was the Tide's lowest shooter with a score of 38. Seniors Andy Levins and Zach Gerding and freshmen Dan Bengtson and Adam Godbout all shot 40. Coach Ed Deshaies was impressed with their "stead performance from top to bottom." (next page »)
