Spader guilty in Mont Vernon machete attack

Spader
Steven Spader was convicted of murder on Nov. 10, 2010 for killing Kimberly Cates and seriously wounded her 11-year-old daughter, Jaimie, during an October 2009 home invasion in Mont Vernon.

A teenager accused of killing a mother and injuring her daughter with a machete during a Mont Vernon home invasion was convicted Tuesday of murder and other charges.

Jurors deliberated for about 90 minutes before returning their verdict against 19-year-old Steven Spader.

The first-degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of life without parole. Spader also was convicted of attempted murder and other felonies.

Spader was the first person to go on trial in the October 2009 attacks that left Kimberly Cates dead and her 11-year-old daughter, Jaimie, gravely wounded.

Prosecutors say Spader wielded a machete and co-defendant Christopher Gribble used a knife during the attacks in the Cates' home.

Jaimie, now 12, survived by pretending to be dead, then staggered, covered in blood, to a kitchen phone to call police. A doctor testified she would have died of a punctured lung if she had lost consciousness before summoning help.

Blows that cut off portions of Jaimie's left foot, split open her head and struck her face with enough force to break her jaw had to have come from a heavy and sharp weapon such as a machete, several doctors testified.

During the two-week trial, defense attorney Jonathan Cohen assailed the credibility of three co-defendants who brokered plea deals and testified against Spader. He suggested they, not Spader, were involved in the attacks.

Gribble is set to go on trial in February.

1: we DO have the death penalty, but it is only for a few very specific crimes.
2: Even it it wasn't so specific in our state he was a minor at the time the crime was committed which is not legal anywhere in the country.

If it makes you feel better one death-eligible offense in this state is killing someone while in jail. Let's face it, without very close supervision Spader is probably a very likely to do just that. Therefore, if you really want the death penalty for him someone else is going to have to die first.

I think a nice, long life with Bubba at his side is quite an acceptable alternative.

In NH, the only crime that is punishable by the death penalty is CAPTIAL MURDER as defined in the applicable RSA's...

This case did NOT meant any of those criteria...

But minors can and have been sentenced to DEATH in other states legally...

Just not in NH if 18 or under when crime was committed...

Capital punishment for crimes committed while the defendant was a minor were officially declared unconstitutional by the supreme court in 2005.

If you go into my comment history you can get a list of death eligible offenses, along with NH's aggravating factors.

Too bad we don't have the death penalty.....though, at 19 with the prospect of life in prison......I hope you live a long life.

Unless Standard Time has propelled us 1 day, less 1 hour, into the future, Spader was convicted on November 9, 2010 not November 10, 2010 as the blurb under Mr. Psycho's photo reads. Glad that this verdict was swift and just. That poor girl will have to live with the horrifying memories and the thought that these animals are still alive but at least they won't get paroled.
