Smoking help can come through text messages

NEW HAMPSHIRE residents who are trying to quit smoking can now get help via text messages from the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The department's public health division has created Text for TIPS, a program to send customized advice to people who sign up and provide information about what kind of tobacco they use and how much progress they've made in quitting.

Participants also can receive daily recorded tips by phone, and eventually will be able to sign up online to receive help by email.

The project is part of the New Hampshire Tobacco Tipline.
