Area senators pan base closing plan

A joint statement by Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire opposed another round of base closings proposed with defense cuts.
They said yesterday that the 2005 base closings are just now being completed. They said it's clear that costs were greater and savings lower than projected.
Meanwhile, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch vowed to work to keep Portsmouth Naval Shipyard open.
The base was spared in the last round of base closings.
