Big mistake, DAVE RIDLEY, Keene - Letter

Whoops! There was a factual error in Katy Burns's column "There goes my muse" (SundayMonitor, Dec. 19). And it's not a minor error. She mentions the Free State Project and claims that "one of their web sites" advocates some rather eye-popping sexual practices.

There is in fact just one FSP website, and it advocates no such thing. It does advocate government downsizing including a general rollback of victimless crime laws. It encourages liberty lovers to move to this state and join our fight to keep New Hampshire government small.

The FSP's site is http://www.FreeStateProject.org; the site she seems to be referencing belongs to a man who is neither in the Free State Project, nor in New Hampshire, nor even planning to move here as best I can tell. The FSP's leadership can't stand the guy and revoked his membership about a year ago. Last I checked, he lives in Florida and rants about moving to Nevada.

Blaming the FSP for his writings would be like me blaming your paper for the writings of a former Monitor subscriber (of which there will surely be many if this kind of error is par for the course)!

I expect politicians to do this kind of thing but hope for something better from journalists. Maybe I'm naïve.
