My turn

I'm sorry, but I had to give Guay a chance

article tools

Fellow Chichester residents, I am truly sorry for the way Raymond Guay's temporary stay at our home may have affected your family. The plan to communicate his presence in our home failed almost immediately. Without casting blame, I want to apologize for my part in that.

Regarding our decision, here are several factors:

• As a family we have frequent interaction with ex-convicts who are part of our church.

• I work closely with Al Lamorey of New Hampshire Prison Ministries, who has ministered in the Concord prison for more than 20 years. I am in the Concord prison with Al on a quarterly basis.

• We would not be doing this if we thought we were endangering our town, neighbors or children.

• We made this decision together as a family.

Regarding Raymond Guay, the obvious facts are public. He has committed some horrendous crimes in his past. What doesn't get reported is that since 1993 his life has been on a very different course. That year he became a follower of Jesus. His first encounter with a genuine Christian was Emily Beane. Sometime in the early 1980s, during a prison escape, Ray held Emily and Eugene Beane captive in their own home in Concord. Seeing Mrs. Bean's kindness, lack of fear and obvious faith was the first time Ray became aware of a different way to live.

In 1993 Ray finally chose to follow Jesus. Lamorey is one of the people who knew Ray before and after his conversion to Christ. Al has stayed close to Raymond, observing a real-life transformation. Ray's prison transformation has continued the past six months since his release. He stayed in the Watkinson halfway house in Hartford and had a fulltime job. Every reference and interview I have been a part of in Ray's case is enthusiastic about him. In fact, if the federal judge in California hadn't insisted he come to New Hampshire to finish his three-year parole, Ray would still have his job and likely have his own apartment.

This 16-year track record of change, our own time with him as a family and the strong local support of our friend Al Lamorey weighed heavily on our decision. Some of the restrictions we have adopted while Ray stays with us are the following:

• This is temporary, with a two-month limit.

• While he is at our home, another adult will always be present.

• He will not leave our property except in a vehicle (he does not have a license).

• The Chichester police dispatch will be informed when he leaves town and when he arrives back in town.

I hope this letter informs you more fully on our decision and reduces your fear level in some manner. While we expect disagreement with our decision, we would ask for civility and respect.

(The Rev. David Pinckney of Chichester is pastor of the River of Grace Church in Concord.)

Letter

First to Child Abuse:
You do realize this was the little girl that had run over to play that morning and was greeted at the Door and invited in by Mr. Guay right? I don't blame the father for being frightened nor the little girl.

Now regarding Letter in general:
Pastor Pinkney,

I am glad to have read the letter now because I have always through this wanted to believe that you thought you were doing the right thing.
One issue I wished you would have addressed in your letter is how you originally divided believers and unbelievers by standing on a soap box about this.
It is easy in retrospect to apologize and I really appreciate that.
But as a Pastor, you have many years behind you of knowledge on how the bible teaches us to react, treat others etc.
I would have expected harsh reaction/quick reactions etc from Christians and Non Christians who are trying to live their every day lives...but a Pastor who is responsible for his words and how they effect others to not realize how this might have effected us, I am still unsure of.
This was not just anyone that you took in.
You know that.

Reforming a Child Molester

To your question, I will say that these "men of the cloth" Hide in those facades, while having NO interest in Jesus what so ever. Dead works!

Norman Kreutzer's picture

Reforming a Child Molester through Jesus????

OK so then here is my question, if that is really possible then WHY were so many priests in this country molesting little boys for so many years before finally being caught???

Anonymous's picture

Is that what Guay meant

I do not know for sure what he means by that, but it very well could be in part of what was said.

A true Christian

I respect you Pastor Pickney for what you are doing as I could not do that myself.

My concern is that while this man has been a law-abiding citizen in Prison for the last 16 years, he is/was a child molester and hasn't had been with children in that time. I fear this is like bringing a alcoholic to live in a liquor store. I'm all for rehabilitation, I just do not think that at this point in his rehabilitation that he should be in contact with children. Whether or not he is always in the presence of another adult - your children could still be a temptation or a reminder for him. What will happen in two months after he has been around/tempted by your children?

I hope that this situation works out and I truly hope that he is truly repentant. For your children and ours.

Mr. Pinckney, If this person is under adult supervision while at your home and will not leave your property except by vehicle.....why did the police pick him up walking on the side of the road yesterday? Please do explain.

Living within a mile I'd like to know if this is true???

Anonymous's picture

whoever asked this question....I got your answer

Please provide proof that you cannot reform a child molester by leading them to Jesus.

Well let's see....first of all when someone commits crime after crime, they certainly didn't find Jesus when he did these crimes, but it's funny now that all is said and done, and he meets with a pastor last week it's "MOVE OVER WORLD RAYMOND GUAY HAS FOUND JESUS....SEND THEM YOUNG BOYS RIGHT OVER TO PLAY" You speak of reform?????? Reform didn't happen when he was in jail with a minister for trying to kill a bike shop owner.....Then he didn't reform while molesting a 15 year old boy out in the woods with the word kill screamming from Guay's mind....reform didn't happen while in and out of jail before killing someone's baby boy? Reform didn't happen when he broke into an elderly couple's home and scare the daylights out of them while stealing their guns and car....nor did he reform for trying to stab an inmate (sorry I don't believe the fork thing either) But low and behold....Ray last week found Jesus.....Go Ray!!!!! We're backing you up 100% NOT!

By Marc on .............Marc I think he was babysitting Guay. But I wish he was there to explain if he really wanted to help another why not take in a homeless person who did no harm to anyone but is out there sleeping in the cold and hungry. But he takes in a child molester/murder and he takes him in after only meeting him once and says he has found God and now wants the community to believe his view of Guay should be the view of everyone else.

I can't help to wonder if he "Dave" took in a homeless person would he get the same kind of media attention?

Is that what Raymond Guay meant in his interview with the manchester union leader a few months ago that he still finds it a struggle between his spirit and the flesh?

Anonymous's picture

Guay

Where is this guy supposed to live? Is he supposed to die? Will you step up to the plate and let him blow his brains out in your home? I think not. You wouldn't want the mess. A classic example of NIMBY. This problem has no easy solution, but remember he has to live somewhere.

Anonymous's picture

What about the others?

Are all of you screamers aware that there are four other registered offenders living in Chichester? Why are you not screaming about them? Because you don't know that they are there! If you had half a brain you could go to the NH State Police Criminal Offenders website and find out exactly who and where. What difference does it make? Registered offenders are registered for a reason. How can you pass judgement on whether or not Mr. Guay's discovery of Jesus is fake or real? You have no idea. Neither do I. He was released as was set forth and is a "free" man. If he reoffends, he is back in prison. My hope and prayers are that this does not happen. I pray that in truth Mr. Guay is reformed. And, yes, it can happen! My own father reformed!

I'm sorry too because you have not ONE CLUE what you're talking about. I was busted in 1974 for distibuting pot in California and spent two years in the State pen out there...I found Christ and he is STILL my Saviour 35 years later....and I haven't touched pot since then. All I can say is I hope you find Him too as it really is life changing....

I am embarrassed to call myself a human being with all these threats and narrow minded comments. This reminds me of white folk going after a black man in a lynching, wherether or not he did something wrong...you all should be throughly ashamed of yourselves...you are shrieking, hysterical people who have nothing better to do than judge a pastor and a man that he is trying to help, yet you would be the VERY FIRST to tell someone not to judge you...how many of you have broken the law? Yes he broke the law and horrendously. How many have driven after drinking one too many? Do you know that you are a POTENTIAL HORRENDOUS MURDERER if you've done that and that the laws of averages say that YOU WILL DO IT AGAIN?

chance....

That is the "chance" you are taking...Regardless of our age, or the time that goes by..."water under the bridge"...we are always attracted to the "same" type; or have those same compulsions. I think that those "things or desires of the flesh" are there(in us) at an earlier age and pretty much stay "in the flesh".
Better a sure thing rather than chance.

Best Regards!

WHAT does religion have to do with this? Bottom line, proven over and over again YOU CANNOT REFORM A CHILD MOLESTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pastor

It's great that you will care about what is happening because you gave Guay a place to stay until he can go off on his own. It's very, very, sad that your actions gave all our big time anti-Christian, Anti-Conservative, Anti-Religious, Anti-Christ people a chance to jump all over you and take advantage of your actions to bash your faith, your church and the place where you all meet to worship God, Concord Christian Academy,
I even saw a bad comments about Al, who spent time in jail in his past years and was lead to accept our Lord and Savior Jesus. And now he works his fingers to the bone to lead convicted criminals to accept Jesus and straighten out their lives. God bless him and you.

Sorry ?

Sorry doesn't cut it, when you try to sneak in a extremely dangerous person in our neighborhood. You have scared all your neighbors, parents and kids alike, this small town and even smaller neighborhood will never be the same. Once someone faces fear, lives in fear their lives are changed forever.
You Mr Pinckney, just like the animal you brought home, have taken the innocense from this town, just like your animal has from all his victims. You now have all your friends and neighbors looking over there shoulders in fear for our lives.
Even when this monster leaves this neighborhood, he now knows where 20 to 30 kids live, with very limited police and protection, all thanks to you.
It doesn't make me feel any better that you Mr Pinckney, told him he can't leave the house. Being the honest and law abiding person that he is, would not even think about leaving in the middle of the night, while your sleeping and attacking someone else. Then returning to your house like nothing happened. Just like his past shows he done many times over.
You Mr. Pinckney, are just as guility as Guay and the Judge who agreed to the original Plea without any sexual charges. As history shows us, he will offend again, I hope you are held personally responsible. Craig McIntosh, Allenstown

Quarterly visits, and PACER.

1.) Quarterly visits to the prison only every 3 months? Hey! Just imagine how many others the pastor could encounter and "help" if he stepped it up to weekly visits? (;-) LOL We could have a neighborhood "block party" and call it Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Two wrongs make a right as they say. (;-) That's what England did when they sent the trouble-makers to Australia in a survival of the fittest atmosphere. Except one escaped and sailed to New York City to become a rabble-rouser, I did just read about the other day, or hear on The History Channel, http://www.history.com/ The Queen, who had commuted his death sentence at the time, was flabbergasted, but at least he had learned his lesson of not to kill again.

2.) In reference to the two commentators asking WHO this judge is, I say WHERE is the complete file? of both this judge's name and of his or her doings with the reasoning-s thereof. As I understand it these cases can be accessed by some PACER outfit. A friend in R.I. does this with his credit card. He records it with the company that charges 8-cents a page to look at. Plus some people even donate to the cause by extracting the entire documents from the docket and cut-and paste I think is the term (me not that computer savvy), to another website where anybody can view for free. Maybe somebody can do this with this case #________ Yeah CONCORD MONITOR, why not provide a footnote link to such a website? BTW my friend says that the PACER company doesn't charge until your credit card is billed to over the $10.00 amount, and so what he does with his many credit cards is get it to a $9.99 billing (that 666 upside down), and starts a new account with a different card. (;-)

he does not have a license......????????? He didn't have a license either the day he broke into that older couple's home and steal their guns and car and took of.

Also when some of you talk about the media not going after the sex offenders who are registered, I think the problem here those people have to resgister which I'm sure they did. Raymond Guay doesn't have to register......therefore it's a huge concern. But also I think it's not just the sex offender part, I think a wide range of this is he tried killing numerous people as well as a 12 year boy.

Name and address of California judge

I would like the name and address of the California judge who ordered Mr. Guay be moved to New Hampshire!! This man was living in a halfway house and working full time in Hartford and from everyone this minister talked with, was supposedly heading down the right path. Now he has been uprooted with no job prospects and no place to stay after the two months he has been granted by this family is up!! Then what??!! Is this family just going to put Mr. Guay out on the street? Does this judge from California have any plans for Mr. Guay when that happens? Or is New Hampshire on its own? The whole thing makes no sense, legally or otherwise, and this judge should be ashamed of him/herself for the choices he has made in this case!

So what now??

We wait until he molests or kills one of your kids? Then we all have to feel bad for you right? As long as what you are doing is in the name of God? You are allowing your children to live in danger as well as every child around you, that is unacceptable! Have you ever heard of DCYF? They need to step in here and do their damn job, get those kids to safety while you roll the dice with your life. You may be doing what you believe to be God's work but if you have any sense you will realize that it has been proven over and over YOU CANNOT REHABILITATE A CHILD MOLESTER!!!

Thank you,

Mr. Pinckney, thank you for taking the time to write your neighbors and friends. I don't mean to mis-represent why I'm writing, I don't believe Mr. Guay has any right to be near your children or mine. If it was left up to me this man's life would have been extinguished many years ago. I'm sure he's reformed and come to Jesus like you say, but what are the guarantees? Yes your children could be harmed tomorrow in the family car, and I don't mean any ill will, but why increase the odds. I respect your beliefs although I may not agree, couldn't he have gone with someone that doesn't have children, I don't think that they should have been placed in the situation of approving or dis-approving, their your children, they love you and respect you, they'll say yes because it's the right thing to do according to how they were raised. I'm all for second chances, although I very strongly believe that for the crimes this man was responsible for, there should be no second chances on this earth. He can take it up with the man upstairs or downstairs if that's what you believe in. For all you folks in Chichester that were on WMUR the other night saying how nice it is that someone took Mr. Guay in, but not in my back yard, shame on you. You can't have it both ways. If you believe that this is appropriate in some manner than if not your back yard than who's? Also just to be very clear, these types of people are already in your back yard, your next door neighbor possibly, or right next to where your child goes to school. We just don't know about it because the media hasn't made a spectacle out of it. There are many websites that you can find out info on registered sex offenders, and where they live and proximity to your schools.

Anonymous's picture

We should have known

I harbor no ill will towards Mr Guay or Mr Pinckney. In fact, I hope Mr Guay can succeed in rebuilding his life. I also commend Mr Pinkney for practicing his beliefs. But we should have known that the misguided thinking of a California judge has played a key role in the disruption of so many lives.

What could this paragon of justice been thinking? "Let us return Mr Guay to the vicinity of the crime. Let us stir up the memories. Let us create a huge controversy that awakens the darkest fear of parents. Let us create a situation that puts enormous pressure on a man trying to figure out how to re-enter society."

This judge is a moron. He (or she) has callously created a situation that disrupts the lives of too many people and created an environment that dramatically lessens the probability of success for Mr Guay. Good luck, Mr Guay. With people like the California judge in your corner, you're going to need it.
