'Pathetic" was our 2005 soccer final team player son's response as we left the 2006 state Class S finals a few minutes into the second half. We were embarrassed and disappointed by the behavior of the Pittsfield team and fans. They booed, they whined, they complained, kicked, grabbed and threatened. Finally, the game was cut short and ended in a compound fracture for a Lisbon player.

Coach Rick Anthony must take full responsibility for the actions and behavior of his team and the fans representing his school. He did not control his team and play well, with dignity and skill.

We have heard him complain during the season and pass off the responsibility for certain players' mouthing off and their poor sportsmanship. Mr. Anthony has had those same players for four and in some cases five years. If he doesn't have those issues under control by now, it is because he does not want to, or it is beyond his own abilities.

By his own statement to the reporter covering the game, Mr. Anthony once again distanced himself from the team and abdicated his own authority and responsibility. Our observation over the past years, having our son and now daughter under Mr. Anthony as coach, is that he has never fully accepted the authority and responsibility that come with the position.

This is unacceptable for a coach and the athletic director of Pittsfield Middle High School. Mr. Anthony has never shown the depth of character and integrity parents and taxpayers expect of an influential person in the lives of their children.

As one family with a child in school sports and two who have graduated, we respectfully submit that Mr. Anthony be relieved of his duties as coach and athletic director.
