Protesters disrupt 'town hall'

Shaheen: Activists should be ashamed
article tools

As any political junkie knows, there's been a lot of yelling about health care in America lately, with people turning up at forums and meetings across the country to confront Democratic senators and congressmen about President Obama's reform push.

Activists appear to have recreated those scenes in New Hampshire this week, minus a couple of key ingredients, namely the congressmen and the town hall meetings.

The phenomenon appears to spring from a couple of conservative websites that have urged followers to attend staff office hours for Sen. Jeanne Shaheen - the usual turf for one-on-one constituent meetings in which a veteran might seek help getting benefits or a dad might ask for his child to be nominated to West Point - which some sites have advertised as health care town halls. One website, for the New Hampshire Tea Party Coalition, urged folks to go to meetings in Hampstead and Grafton to ask questions about "government takeover of health care."

Then, Obama's Organizing for America campaign joined in with an apparent effort to oppose the opposition: The group's Tim Arsenault sent out an "urgent invitation" to followers early yesterday asking them to attend a "Town Hall with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen" in Grafton and to demonstrate "your support of health insurance reform." A spokesman for Organizing for America did not return a call for comment yesterday afternoon.

Except that Shaheen wasn't in Grafton yesterday - she was in Washington, voting to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. And the event wasn't what in political-speak is called a "town hall"; it was Shaheen staffers holding office hours in Grafton's town hall.

The results, according to folks who've been there and to videos posted online, have been dozens of folks turning out with signs like "No Obama Care" or "Obama Care - Bend Over and Cough" and chanting outside the constituent meetings this week.

Shaheen, for one, was not amused. She chastised the groups yesterday in a statement that said protesters had gone too far, "intimidating people who had come to get help" and videotaping constituents who didn't want to be videotaped.

"These are not town hall meetings but rather office hours that we host in Town Halls across the state in order to make our caseworkers available to New Hampshire citizens who need help," Shaheen said in the statement. "The organizations that staged these protests knew these weren't town hall meetings because we called them to tell them so. I recognize the right of people on both sides of the aisle to protest, but impeding the ability of New Hampshire citizens to get the help they need is a line that shouldn't be crossed. They should be ashamed."

Libertarian activist Dave Ridley was there in Grafton yesterday with his video camera. (The video he posted on his website has blacked-out moments in it for citizens who didn't want to be taped.) He chronicled a scene of a couple dozen people holding protest signs and interviewed a supporter of Obama's health insurance reform effort. A couple of people puzzle at the fact that the Shaheen staffers aren't holding a forum.

"They're afraid of us and rightfully so," one man tells the camera. "Government should be afraid of us."

Ridley said he saw notice of the Grafton meeting on a tea party website and decided to attend because he lives right in town. Told that the meeting was in fact a constituent-services hour and not a major forum, Ridley said he still believes taxpayers have the right to query Senate staffers, who, he notes, are paid with taxpayer money.

"The taxpayers have a right to question (a staffer) all day," he said. He said it was little surprise to him that the health care debate has drawn such intense interest, because a reform to the health care system will affect so many.

"It's so drastic and so dangerous in people's minds that it's pulling people out of the woodwork," he said. (next page »)

what is grass roots?

Grassroots, its an interesting term, that has been applied for some time in the political world meaning a movement started by the common people (middle and lower classes).

To all those who do believe that demonstrating at town halls, and asking staffers what their constituents point of view is on health care reform (or any other matter), is truly a grass roots organization, I would ask you to please think about these few facts:

The idea that the Tea Parties were organized by the common people, is false. In fact they were organized by the likes of Steve Forbs (ya the billionaire, not quite part of the middle or lower classes) and Dick Army a former house GOP leader. I do believe that some concerned citizens were informed about these Tea Parties by people they knew and/or trusted, and did not believe them to be something thought up by a bunch of big wigs living of of our struggles. I would never wish to smother someones right to free speech, but please dont think that this is a grass routs movement!, it was orchestrated from the top.

But now, as I am working to find independent sources to verify my claims, I am left to ponder: Can I name any grass roots campaign of any sort that's motivation did not come from a few selective individuals in places of power(liberal or conservative)? I am pretty sure that Obama's campaign was organized by his staffers, or supporters(who are in that same elite echelon as our friends Dick and Steve that I mentioned earlier). As I write this I have come to believe that really, there are very few grass roots movements, and that I have most likely never seen any in my short lifetime.

Well this has been quite the ramble and has taken me way to long to write. I wish to say, that I thoroughly enjoy discussing, and having friendly conversations about politics, and personal philosophical/religious beliefs. I'm not here to impose my belief set, just to exercise my rights to the 1st Amendment.

And of course you are wrong.

NH Tea Party Coalition is not paid for or run by any outside force.

On the other hand, you have SEIU/ACORN/OFA/DNC, all powered by Soros and other dirtry communist 'foundation' money from outside the country with nefarious interests.

There are thousands of ads asking people to sign up for these PAID JOBS.

There is a great article on the tea party website about that... look it up won't you?

So far no one can show any proof that the thousands of people in our NH Tea Party movement are paid by anyone. Because they aren't! LOL

And unfortunately, the NH GOP is mum on this, not one word to our formidable group.

They are simply the majority who know this isn't about health care, but about controlling our lives in a managed society of Obama's Orwellian dreams.

My Opinion

The more the libs make an issue out of this, the better. It shines a VERY bright light on what "free speech" is and is not. It's free speech when it supports their cause. It's considered a conservative aganda when people gather to speak out. The citizens speaking out are not conservatives. They are residents of this state, citizens of this country who are saying NO!!!! Enough is enough. The people have the power, NOT our elected officials.

I hope the media continues to cover this -I hope every American sees this administration for what it is. Power hungry, freedom blockers who hide behind their liberal media for support. This country is in a bad place. Something needs to be done -FAST!

THROW SHAHEEN OUT OF OFFICE

Dear Ms. Shaheen,
I hope you enjoyed your stay in Wash. D.C. on MY DIME. I see that you wont be happy until I have NO DIMES left. So therefor I'm obligated to do my best to make sure you are NOT re-elected. I can assure you I will be working overtime for YOUR opponent along with those running against Shea-Porter and Hodes.

Hampstead Town Hall Meeting

I work for the Town of Hampstead and was present in the Selectman's meeting room on Thursday when Jeanne Shaheen's staff representatives were there to answer questions of the residents. There were many residents of Hampstead there to express their own concerns and yes the concerns were about their healthcare. Anyone who wanted to speak to the staffers, stood in line and individually spoke to them. No one blocked access to these staffers at all. In fact, when it was my turn, the staffer could not give me any information on Shaheen's position on issues and handed me a form letter to fill out and assured me that it would get to the Senator.
I asked the Staffer if Jeanne Shaheen had read the healthcare proposal/bill, and they stated that there is no proposal or bill to read. But if I had any questions about Social Security, or Veterans' issues, that they could help me.
Surprisingly, there was no mention of several people picketing on the Town Hall front lawn who were in support of the Obama Healthcare proposal. I saw two men park their car with Massachusetts plates in the Town Hall parking lot, and then join the Obama supporters. They had Obama t-shirts on.
It is pretty obvious that the Senator does not want to hear our concerns about healthcare unless we support her stand on it. She forgot that she was voted in by the people and works for us! She can just as easily be voted out!!

colleeninhampstead's picture

Thank You Colleen!

Shaheen's presser is a complete turnaround of the truth.

No one was intimidated. Why would we want to intimidate people looking for help?
Truth is, the people there looking for help were US, and we didn't get it!
We want our 3 chicken reps to schedule REAL town hall meetings and FACE THEIR CONSTITUENTS which they will NOT DO.

We spent all of 10 minutes in there, big deal.
Most of the time outside, standing opposite a few paid workers from Mass... you know the organized mob?

Whoever wrote that presser for Shaheen ought to be arrested for being liar.

Notice she had to use the words NH Constituents when referring to the non-existent people who were supposedly blocked? And she referred to us, her REAL constituents, as protesters!

What audacity!

NH's picture

protesters or community organizers?

I think conservative folks, like myself, are just trying to be like Obama - we're just organizing against "the man".

NH_Native's picture

Thank You

First, we did not 'disrupt' anything, as we were the main attraction. Please do not make it as if there were any supporters there in any great numbers because there weren't. It was not a town hall meeting, but it was AT a town hall..the title should have read, "Protesters shout at staffers at NH town halls".

I would actually like to commend Ms. Dorgan on this piece which is surprisingly fair for the CM because it exposes a couple of things...

- These staffers have no idea what to tell constituents. In Hampstead on Wednesday, the staffers even went so far as to say 'there is no bill'. No wonder the crowd went ballistic! But Shaheen's presser is wrong -- NO ONE was blocked from seeing anyone in either place. The crowd might have yelled for a few minutes but then they went outside. There were really no supporters there. Most of the time the opponents stood and held signs along the road.

- I resent how staffers automatically assumed these people were not from NH or Grafton. All the Pelosi propaganda talking points are untrue --- there is no one fueling, bussing or paying for this movement. WE ARE CONSTITUENTS not just protesters as Shaheen characterized us. (Unlike the unions who are paid out of state SEIU/ACORN workers, some illegals, who come here and stand with signs)

- NH TPC did NOT tell anyone Shaheen would be there, but the OFA did... see the actual email on the Tea Party website that was captured.

The purpose of these 'office hours' is to 'get help'. They are apparently not interested in helping those of us who do NOT want Obamacare.

Repeat: the point of these protests which will continue are to ask for REAL face to face meetings not phony conference calls, and for our Reps to admit that we are in the MAJORITY and we do not want this dangerous power grab by the government to occur and to vote accordingly.

Everyone should join us and give their time... or end up on the wrong side of some health czar who will decide whether you live or die!

Telephone Meeting

I recieved a call last night around 6:45, It was Shaheen's office. they were holding a sort of town hall telephone question & answer session, Why did they call my phone? because I have written and phoned her office several time over the past few months to state my grievences.Only to recieve a standard Auto response. I listened as callers from around the state asked their questions and voiced their concernes, ALL the callers were polite and asked legitimate questions, Many callers stated that they were against a public option. Ms Shaheen made it very clear last night that she supported a public option,in spite of the concerns of the puplic, She feels the need to give the insurance companies compition! She also talked about making a deal with a (one)drug Co,to make perscriptions more affordable.ALL the liberal talking points were in play on every question, some I agreed with, but most I did'nt,but I listened just the same. I Finally after about 40 minutes or so, got to the point where it was my turn to ask a question, a voice came on and said what is your name & town and what is your question or comment,; I have many questions so I tried to get them all in at once. Why dont you let insurance companies cross state lines so that the person in say NH, could get a policy from say Oregon, that would better suit their needs, Give people that purchase health insurance a tax credit, This would give Insurance companies true compitition, rather than a government takeover, My second question, Why is it fair to tax or penalize a small businessman with a few employees who cant even provide healthcare for themselves, let alone their employees, they will not only pay a fine for not insuring the employees but a fine for not having your own coverage. (A Double Zap)is that FAIR? and lastly,Are you aware Ms Shaheen that in HB3200 there is a provision that allows the government or any burocratic agency to acess your banking information in REAL TIME in order to extract payments. The lady said thank you for your question, please hold for the Senator, as I listened for my prompt, I heard the senator thanking everyone for participating, but she had to wrap up and would take all suggestions into consideration, and if she couldnt take your question please leave a message.GEE it left me wondering would she had taken 1 more question if it was more of a softball? I was disapointed to say the least. I wanted her to hear MY concerns in MY voice,
The people that are showing up at these town hall meetings and at the offices of our reps are frustrated citizens that are not being heard, being responded to by standard Auto reply letters or are being dismissed as the fringe, and just plain ol ignored. but these elected officials know that this is an very unpopular program they are trying to ram through. And Yes the polititions are becoming intimidaded by their own constituants, what does that tell you!
Conservatives protesting!!! who ever heard of such a thing? that is usually the Liberals area of expertise. now the shoe is on the other foot, and the libs are just beside themself,&not sure how to handle it. So they accuse them of being paid protesters, sent by greedy insurance companies, and republican polititions. I Know that old woman in one of those town hall meetings sure looked like a trouble making thug! YES THEY ARE SHOUTING, sometimes you have to shout in order to be heard. (any parent should be able to relate to that!)I think they are finally starting to hear us , but the bigger question is will they finally listen? I certainly would'nt bet on it!

feduptohere's picture

Telephone meetings are useless

These teleconferences are useless.. it's just a way to cook the books and avoid real questions and certainly avoid people face to face.

We need to vote these people out if they DARE to allow this Obamacare and cap and trade bill through.

It will devastate America as we know it, which his their purpose and intent.

bunch of nonsense

This is not free speech, this is disrupting free speech. If people want to organize to come have a dialogue and present their views, that is the American way. Shouting down speakers and making everyone miserable is childish and pathetic, the opposite of what a true exercise of citizenship should be. I also find the "grassroots" nature of these protests to be highly questionable.

Michael57's picture

This IS grass roots.

Unlike the AFL-CIO directive rallying it's members, and the DNC memo feeding talking points to its sheep, what we have are real people who are really upset with what is happening to our country. It started with the tea parties last April and is continuing with the health care monstrosity now. These are not paid staffers or rent a mobs, these are ordinary people.

The left has no idea how to handle real grassroots protest. Despite all the demonization and name calling, this is steamrolling along. Despite what Nancy Pelosi says, the group of residents protesting in Grafton didn't look like a bunch of Swastika wearing Nazis to me. This scary group of crazed browshirts in Hampstead sure don't look like the insurance industry shills. No, these are just ordinary people exercising their right to redress the government of grievances.

We will not be silenced.

I can think of all sorts of people who belong on it, starting with our legislatures, then working on down through the layers and layers of bureaucrats and minions. Should be quite a long, long, list. Remember to check it twice before hitting the send button.

I wonder if such lists ring a familiar bell to the hippy protesters of yore. Or do they have their hearing aides turned off, their minds too addled with TCH, and their bodies so ravaged by time that they "need" BozO-Care to tuck them in at night.

Tea party protests across the nation on April 15th with hundreds of thousands of people and not one report of violence. Contrast that with this SEIU member beating on an Obamacare opponent. I can't tell you how many times I hear people say "If you don't vote, you can't complain."
I can't tell you how many times I hear people say- "What's the point? No one listens!"
And they would be correct.
Millions of people contacted their Congressman and Reps and anyone they could get a hold of to voice their opnions on the first farce of a "stimulus package".
Millions said no to selling our country out to China.
The people we voted into office didn't listen to us.
They continue not to listen to us and continue to do what they want to do in order to keep their politican friends happy.
Well, now the people are getting louder and I say it's about time.
We don't want or need socialist medicine. It doesn't work in other countries (that's why they come here for healthcare) and it isn't going to work here.
The government is in our lives enough already. I don't want them to tell me that someone in my family "is not worth fixing".
You can bash whomever you like here, but remember BOTH parties are at fault for this.
I just can't understand why people think this prez is doing such a great job. He has done nothing to improve this country. He has given billions to people who don't need it and saddled the everyday working class with the bill. The people have had enough.
