South Carolina governor admits straying in Argentina

After going AWOL for seven days, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted yesterday that he had secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he was having an affair. Wiping away tears, he apologized to his family and gave up a national Republican Party post but was silent on whether he would resign.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," he said in a news conference in which the 49-year-old governor ruminated on God's law, moral absolutes and following one's heart. He said he spent the last five days "crying in Argentina."

Sanford, who in recent months had been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012, said he would resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

By leaving the country without formally transferring power, critics said he neglected his gubernatorial authority and put the state at risk. It wasn't clear how his staff could reach him in an emergency.

At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

The affair is now over, Sanford said, describing the woman who lives in Argentina as a "dear, dear friend" who he has known for about eight years and been romantically involved with for about a year. He said he has seen her three times since the affair began, and his wife found out about it five months ago. A newspaper published steamy e-mails between Sanford and the woman. He did not identify her.

"What I did was wrong. Period," he said. His family did not attend the news conference, and his wife, Jenny Sanford, said she asked the governor to leave and stop speaking to her two weeks ago. The governor said he wants to reconcile, and his wife's statement said her husband has earned a chance to resurrect their marriage.

"This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage," she said.

Sanford denied instructing his staff to cover up his affair but acknowledged that he told them he thought he would be hiking on the Appalachian Trail and never corrected that impression after leaving for South America.

"I let them down by creating a fiction with regard to where I was going," Sanford said. "I said that was the original possibility. Again, this is my fault in . . . shrouding this larger trip."

Questions about Sanford's whereabouts arose early this week. For two days after reporters started asking questions, his office had said he had gone hiking on the trail.

Cornered at the Atlanta airport by a reporter from South Carolina newspaper The State, Sanford revealed yesterday morning that he had gone to Argentina for a seven-day trip.

When news first broke about his mysterious disappearance, Jenny Sanford told the Associated Press she did not know where her husband had gone for the Fathers Day weekend.

Sanford emerged yesterday afternoon at a news conference, where he mused openly of his love of hiking and how he used to guide trips along the Appalachian Trail, and eventually tearfully apologized to his wife, his staff and his friends - but without yet saying what he was apologizing for.

"I hurt a lot of different folks," he said, occasionally choking up throughout the news conference that lasted about 20 minutes.

With those watching still wondering what he was admitting, Sanford said: "The odyssey that we're all on in life is with regard to heart."

Excerpts of e-mail exchanges between the governor and his mistress were published online yesterday by The State. The governor's office wouldn't discuss the e-mails with the Associated Press but told The State it wouldn't dispute the authenticity of the messages.

One from the governor read: "I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details." Dear posters and poseurs:
Can't we just enjoy these politicians, regardless of party demarcations, for what they are: slime mold manifesting itself into human form? Really, to bicker over whether this scum bag is worse or better than the other on the other team just takes away from the sheer enjoyment of watching them be exposed. You posters are better than that! So drop your rancorous electronic sword play, sit back, take a big swill of your best home brew, and enjoy this moment. They only come along every few years or so.

The governor was attempting to secure support from the Russians for a second American Revolution.

The cover story will break down in a few months.
His wife understands. If you pay attention, so will you.

Let's pray the Russians don't decide to "help" the Republic by Nuking it.

This is a Democrat vs. Republican thing.

I don't care if Gov. Sanford cheats on his wife. Really. It doesn't matter to me. I wouldn't have issues supporting a candidate who has an affair, if they are doing their job.

However, here's what Sanford said about Bill Clinton's West Wing blow job:

We're supposed to shoot for higher standards and values even if we're all flawed humans. At least the Republicans attempt to stand for something even if, as individuals, they can't all live up to it.

The Liberals, on the other hand, seem determined to remove or lower just about all standards and values because "everyone must have prizes" and to suggest otherwise must mean you're a bigot, or racist, or hypocrite or whatever.

    Jirdex77's picture

"At least the Republicans attempt to stand for something even if, as individuals, they can't all live up to it."

The problem is that they attempt to stand for higher standards as they apply to other people. The people that they govern.

    yesacrellim's picture

for something even if, as individuals, they can't all live up to it.

So... let me get this right. Republicans, as a whole, have values, but as individuals, fail to support them; or some, many, most, whatever.

This is why you have a problem referring to Democrats as hypocrites?

    BillFromDover's picture

"...and I threw the Barney Frank thing in to show that Democrats have no morals or values."

And this little statement of yours shows me that recent events have taught you nothing. If I was as into making broad generalizations as you are I'd say that it shows that Republicans (or Conservatives) are incapable of learning.

    yesacrellim's picture

I do not trust any politicians except maybe Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin. (You know the Dem's detectives have been all over both of them.) You apparently look for the D or the R to determine whether or not you can trust a politician. I'd call that naive bordering on ignorance.

    LIAMD2's picture

"You apparently look for the D or the R to determine whether or not you can trust a politician. I'd call that naive bordering on ignorance."

This new format throws me off sometimes. Was this directed at me?

    yesacrellim's picture

    yes

    LIAMD2's picture

Well what the hell are you talking about?

    yesacrellim's picture

...it was directed at you. The moderator is only allowing about 1/2 my postings so you'll have to use your imagination if you need a response from me.

    LIAMD2's picture

I don't have that kind of imagination. You pulled that out of nowhere. Maybe in a conversation you can get away with that kind of mischaracterization. But my words are here for all to read.

Let me be clear: I vote for Democrats because of the policies. I believe that concepts like trust and morality are not monopolized by any party. There are people with an R after their name that I trust but would not vote for. (Huckabee comes to mind). You on the other hand, claim to be free of party allegiance, yet the only two politicians you claim to trust are both Republicans and you believe that Democrats have no morals. It sounds to me like you make judgments about people based on whether or not they have a D or R after their name, so I guess you're naive bordering on ignorant.

Yeah, I'll bet you're really being edited because the Monitor is afraid that you're brilliant opinions are going to shake the world. Thus far all you've shown is a tendency to be dishonest, inaccurate, and unoriginal.

    yesacrellim's picture

The policies of "let's take money from the taxpayers for our lobbyist friends and their pet projects". Sounds like you either don't pay taxes or you inherited a lot of $$. In regards to morals, name a few Democrats with morals. Barney Frank? Nancy Pelosi? Chris Dodd? John Edwards? Bill Clinton? Bill Richardson? Help me out here. And you'll have to ask the moderator to explain why many of my posts that aren't "rude, crude or offensive" (to use their terms) are left off.

    LIAMD2's picture

Are they editing your actual posts too? Because they seem largely irrelevant to the conversation we're having and you're making me repeat myself over and over again.

For instance: "The policies of "let's take money from the taxpayers for our lobbyist friends and their pet projects". Sounds like you either don't pay taxes or you inherited a lot of $$."

What does this have to do with what we're discussing? Are you saying that Republicans don't take money from taxpayers for their lobbyist friends and their pet projects?

"In regards to morals, name a few Democrats with morals. Barney Frank? Nancy Pelosi? Chris Dodd? John Edwards? Bill Clinton? Bill Richardson? Help me out here."

Yeah, and Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, John Ensign, Bob Foley, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, David Vitter, Dick Cheney,etc....So what? I have repeated over and over again that I am not saying that Dems have a lock on morality. Only that Republicans claim they do which is exemplified by your position that Democrats have no morals. Then you turn around and say that I have partisan blinders in issues of morality. It makes no sense.

    yesacrellim's picture

The Monitor does not edit any comments. We do, however, block comments that violate our posting guidelines. Commenters who repeatedly violate the guidelines must have their comments reviewed by a moderator before they are posted online.

    CM Moderator's picture

Oh, I know. I was just pointing out that LIAMD is barely sticking to the point and facetiously suggesting that someone must be jumping in to make it appear that way.

    yesacrellim's picture

With all due respect, you're full of crap. Many of my postings are left off.

    LIAMD2's picture

Are you saying that they are going in and changing your words? Or that they are blocking your posts..because the Content Monitor said they did that...that would hardly make him full of crap. I thought when someone's post was blocked it was highlighted in gray like it is in my exchange in today's health care letter for some reason. I don't see any gray in our exchange here.

    yesacrellim's picture

Posts from trusted participants that appear online but are later removed/hidden due to violation complaints are highlighted in gray to account for any interruption or confusion that removing them may cause in the online conversation. Posts from others that are reviewed by a moderator and blocked due to violations before ever appearing online are not visible: There's no reason to make them gray since they were never seen online as part of any conversation.

    CM Moderator's picture

You left off one of my posts from yesterday. It was in regards to the cap and trade bill. My post contained nothing that could be construed as rude, crude or offensive. It just contained facts. Here's another fact...liberals lie and you, Ms. Moderator are a liberal.

    LIAMD2's picture

They have never changed any of my words. They have left off a large number of my posts however. I'm not backing away from this statement - it is accurate. And I'm not talking about offensive posts. I can fully appreciate why I have 10+ "grayed out" posts.

    LIAMD2's picture

Please inform me that I'm missing the scarcasm here?

Why are all political wives so pathetic. Why do they all "stand by their man". Just once I would like to see one of them throw all his crap out on the front lawn and get a big name divorce lawyer. Come on political wives, don't be so pathetic. Wives deserve better and they should be a better role model to others." Save some pride and dignity when it comes to infidelity. We are talking betrayal here.....the trust is gone forever! Wake up America and vote these lying cheating bums out of office as they can't be trusted. If they are willing to throw their loved ones under the bus, what are they willing to do to their constituents.

...not a Democrat. It's a gal and she better be real hot. It cost him a chance at the presidency.

    LIAMD2's picture

    "...not a Democrat"

Oh, yeah, name for me a couple of Democratic politicians who got caught in a gay infidelity scandal in the last few years. Then name for me the number of politicians from the party of family values that got caught in a similar scandal. Come to think of it..what difference does it make if it's a gay affair or not? Should'nt members of the party of "the sanctity of marriage," be expected to hold up the sanctity of their own marriage? Or, is that just for other people?

"It's a gal and she better be real hot."

I'm sure she'll be striking and have a huge penis. I will not believe that this is a woman even if I see her.

"It cost him a chance at the presidency."

Yeah, like he was ever gonna win. It probably cost him a future shot at any kind of South Carolina statewide office and if more is found out it could cost him his governorship.

I'm really broken up about this.

    yesacrellim's picture

McGreevey was cheating on his wife with a male aide. No conflict there. Then there Barney Frank. He was cheating on his live-in boyfriend but his boyfriend was running a gay prostitution ring out of Frank's D.C. home. Didn't hear about this one? I wonder why? As for the huge penis thing, that's something you should really keep to yourself.

    LIAMD2's picture

    LIAMD2 -
Per your last comment, she likes to share (being an altruistic Democrat). And I, for one, applaud her, as I like to be shared too!
    - C. dog (women's best friend)

    C. dog e. doGy's picture

Okay, Jim McGreevey. And wasn't the Barney Frank prostitute thing ages ago? But you seem to have glossed over my overall point which is that Republicans can't be caught cheating with anyone gay or straight. Theyneed to be held to a higher standard because they are the the party of morals and the Democratic party is bound for the gates of Hades and taking everyone down with them. You'd agree with that wouldn't you?

Oh, the penis thing and the mistress being a man is just to lighten the mood a little. I'm sure she's a woman. Liam, this is a sad occasion: A once great political party is struggling with a perception of hypocrisy. I'm just using a little humor to make the Republicans feel better. You like it?

    yesacrellim's picture

...but if you're saying the Democrats are somehow better, you're out of your mind. I enjoy bad humor so the penis thing is fine with me. In regards to hypocrisy, the Dems have the corner on that market. Just like over-spending by the government. The Republicans tried to show the Dems that they could do it too but the Dems are making it clear that they take a backseat to no party when it comes to squandering taxpayer money.

    LIAMD2's picture

"In regards to hypocrisy, the Dems have the corner on that market."

You figured this out how by using government spending as an example? That is such a god awful example I can't believe you have the nerve to use it. The Democrats don't make a claim to be the party of frugal spending. The Republicans do. Except for when they are in power and then they don't. Of course now that they're out of power, the party line is "We'll never do it again."

The Republicans claim to be the party of high moral values and decry rights for homosexuals as ruining the institution of marriage. This is the party of abstinence only education. You yourself apparently think that Republicans have better morals than Democrats and that is the perception among evangelical voters nationwide.. Yet, in the past two weeks, two of the major voices in that party have been caught cheating on their wives. In the past couple of years: one of the major players in the party of values solicited gay bathroom sex, another sent dirty messages to a page of the same sex, and another got a hooker. Yet all of these men belong to the party of family values. Individual Republicans can not practice what their party preaches. But what do the Republicans say? "Please forgive us." Well, like so many Republican themes, the tune changes once things happen to them or their families doesn't it?

Are the Democrats morally better? Hell no, Spitzer tried to crack down on prostitution while using it, Edwards ran for President knowing that his infidelities would cause his party to lose the elect. But as a party, they don't claim to be better. As a party Republicans stand for personal responsibility, restraint of government spending, the sanctity of marriage and moral values...for other people.

    yesacrellim's picture

If the Republicans strive to be the party of family values, what do the Democrats strive to be? I guess that's pretty clear - the Dems are the party of no values. You guys should change the official name to the Degenerate Party.

    LIAMD2's picture

The Barney Frank scandal was almost 20 years ago! That's the example you come up with? How's that prove your statement that Democratic politicians corner the market on gay scandals? If you're gonna go back that far, what about Michael Huffington wasn't he another Republican?

Republican politicians are more likely to be closeted homosexuals who make policies that negatively affect homosexuals.

    yesacrellim's picture

...and I threw the Barney Frank thing in to show that Democrats have no morals or values. Barney is still in office. Sanford is probably washed up. Gerry Studds, another MA Representative, got a 16 yr old male page drunk and sodomized him. He was voted back in too. I'll agree with your last sentence to a point (since Charlie Crist will be "outed" soon.)
