As a parent of two Belmont High graduates and the grandmother of two future Belmont High graduates, I write in support of the Shaker school district's proposal to build an auditorium and additional classroom space at the high school.
An auditorium will give our performing students a place to showcase their talents. This is where students who do not participate in sports can shine. An auditorium will provide a place for graduation ceremonies when the weather forces graduates and their families indoors. An auditorium will provide better visibility and comfort at school district and town meetings. The auditorium can be rented to theatrical and musical groups, helping to defray some operating costs.
At Belmont High, neither of my daughters participated in sports, but both were involved in the concert band, jazz band, marching band and drama productions. I know firsthand how important these activities were to round out their education.
Following in his mother's footsteps, one of my grandsons is involved in chorus, vocal ensemble and the recorder ensemble at Belmont Elementary. I hope that one day soon he will have the opportunity to feel the thrill of performing in an auditorium.
Please vote yes in support of Article 3 at the Shaker school district meeting today at Belmont Middle School. Voting begins at 6, the meeting at 7.
