It’s Not Worth Having An Accident

I try to avoid animals in the road.  Within reason I will do whatever I can to avoid hitting a wild animal, or especially someone’s pet.

But no matter how much I don’t want to hit an animal in the road, I won’t have an accident over it.  If the situation is created that I simply cannot avoid the animal I’m not going to make dangerous maneuvers in order to avoid hitting it.  Sorry, but in that situation, my safety and health and that of the drivers around me come first.

Yes, that means I have hit a few animals over the years.  No, I don’t like admitting to that fact; for two reasons.  One is the fact that it represents a failure on my part.  I didn’t drive well enough to maneuver the car out of the situation.  Although, as I recall, at least one or two of those were in my old `74 Dodge van, and the words “maneuver” and “old Dodge van” do not go together in a positive relationship; ever.

Two is because I remember them.  But even with those memories, and no matter how I look at it, it’s not worth having an accident trying to avoid an animal in the road.  All possible avoidance?  Yes, absolutely, and I will drive right to the limit of my vehicle and myself.

Best to know what that limit is before you try to do it, though.  Here’s where I am going to bring up my usual favourite topic; driver education.  Every driver can benefit from taking driving skills classes and there are school that specialize in what is usually referred to as “performance driving.”  This doesn’t mean racing, as some mistakenly think.  Performance driving is about knowing the limits of your vehicle and your skill.  Knowing both of these things can greatly improve the outcome of an emergency driving situation.
