They watched fireworks explode. They went shopping. And they resolved to make this year better than the last.

Revelers around the world yesterday bid adieu to 2013 and ushered in the new year. In Australia, which is in a time zone ahead of Concord, people watched a fireworks display at the historic Sydney Opera House. In Pakistan, children marched through the streets holding signs bidding farewell to the year.

Locally, First Night celebrations were held in both Portsmouth and Wolfeboro.

The Monitor went to press before the big ball dropped in New York’s Times Square, but here’s a snapshot of how people celebrated elsewhere.
