Personal tracking system helps locate people with memory issues
There is a little-known service available in the town of New London. It is a personal tracking system to help locate people with memory issues who may be at risk for wandering away from safety. The New London Fire Department manages this service. The identified clients wear a small device, much as you would a watch or anklet. If the individual wanders off and cannot be found, a call to the New London Fire Department puts a search into action. The firefighters “triangulate” the position of the client and bring him/her home to safety.
My mother wore one of these devices for several years, as she did wander off from home, even in cold conditions, and we worried for her safety. The New London Fire Department responded to our calls and before they could drive to our home, she had been located!
Mom also went missing in Charleston, S.C. When I called the local police, I was told they could not do anything until she had been gone for many hours. But when I informed them of this tracking device from the New London Fire department the Charleston police recognized the reality of her dementia and responded immediately. Mom was found very quickly, actually before the New London Fire Department was contacted.
My entire family appreciates the availability of this system and the professional way it was handled by the New London Fire Department. We thank the New London Fire Department and all of its volunteers and staff.
